Tom and Darlene Westbrock Retire from IWCA Board of Directors

In 2006, Tom Westbrock was elected Treasurer of the IWCA and has served in the position for 11 years.

Tom's wife, Darlene has filled in for the Secretary for the IWCA, taking and publishing minutes from the annual board meetings when the secretary could not attend, and also served as Ballot Clerk during the 2008 election at the annual board meeting.

In 2012, Darlene graciously stepped up to take over the membership portion of the Secretary's job, knowing the burden it would have on the newly elected Secretary. Darlene has managed the memberships (individual and affiliate) for five years.

Tom and Darlene became lifetime members of the IWCA in 1990 as wildfowl carvers. Over the years, their wildfowl carvings have won numerous awards at the many IWCA Afffilate Shows and the Ward World Championship.

We at the IWCA will miss having Tom and Darlene on the IWCA Board of Directors, and we look forward to seeing them and their wildfowl carvings at the IWCA Affiliate Member Shows in the future. The IWCA is grateful for the many years these two wonderful people have dedicated as volunteers to the IWCA and we wish them well in their retirement!

Tom and Darlene Westbrock - IWCA Awards of Appreciation - Presented on behalf of the IWCA by Brad Snodgrass at the 2017 Columbia Flyway Wildlife Show in Vancounver, WA The IWCA is still looking to the positions of "Treasurer" and "Membership Chair". If you feel you could fill either position, or know of someone who can, please contact our President Monty Willis, and he can fill you in on the details!

Announcing the IWCA President's Wildfowl Carver of the Week - Colin Everett

Just in from our President Monty Willis:

"Colin you might not know who I am, but today I am naming you my Carver of the Week, Monty Willis, President of the International Wildfowl Carvers Association! Please have your Grandfather give us your last name and congratulations on becoming this weeks wildfowl carver!"

Gene Everett teamed up with his 11 year old Grandson to carve this decoy for donation...

"My Grandson and I teamed up on this Scaup. Colin is 11, I carved the head and he did the body. He painted 90% and I painted a few of the finer details. The decoy is being donated to a youth waterfowl event as an auction item to support their effort."

- The International Wildfowl Carvers Association, better known as IWCA, is the outgrowth of a group of carvers from all parts of the country who met in 1986 to find a way to establish competition rules and procedures that would be uniformly fair for all carvers. The organization was officially formed in 1988 with a mission to promote development of wildlife art and the uniquely American art of the decoy.

- The mission of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center is to establish a facility that will enhance the community, state and region by creating a resource which brings together the historical, cultural, artistic, environmental, and educational elements needed to preserve the rich waterfowl heritage of eastern North Carolina associated with the Core Sound area.

- The Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild’ mission is to safeguard and preserve the memory of those pioneers who helped define the Core Sound decoy carving heritage by offering an honest view of the past, while increasing awareness and appreciation of waterfowl, and providing demonstrations and workshops so that the decoy carving heritage will continue on to the next generation.

Byrn Watson, July 18, 1934 to February 19, 2017

Byrn Watson, President of the IWCA from 2006 to 2012, passed away peacefully on the morning of February 19, 2017 after a short illness.

Byrn, and his wife JoAnne, joined Bob Sutton in the early days of the IWCA to assist in the administrative side.  A staunch supporter of the association he dedicated many hours to furthering the art of wildfowl carving and was always trying to find new ways to promote it.

For many years he was closely involved in the organization and funding of the California Open Show, and in more recent years – after their move from California to Washington State – with the Columbia Flyway Show.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Byrn on Sunday, April 9th at 3:00PM at Jackson Prairie Church in South Chehalis, WA.

Our thoughts are with JoAnne and their family at this time.
