The results are in! Many thanks to IWCA Records Keeper, Tom Goddard, for compiling the points through out the year for the final results! Now we have the winners. In fact, due to several ties in 2018, we have several winners across the country!
Each winner will receive an engraved plaque for their efforts and successes in 2018. Novice and intermediate carvers entered their works at the various IWCA Affiliate Member Shows held over the course of the year. With every win, in the decoratrive divisions, the carver accrued points for a final total at the end of the year.

The WWA has announced the dates and location of the 2019 Decoy Carving Competition. The event will be held on July 27th at the Cabela's in Richfield, WI during the Waterfowl Weekend. Entries for the decoy competition will be accepted on July 26 as well.

The Core Sound Decoy Festival will be hosts of the 2018 IWCA Style Championship as well as the IWCA Working Decoy Championship on December 1st & 2nd in Harkers Island, NC.
Walter (Brother) Gaskill won this year's poster contest with his Belted Kingfisher (2018 Featured Species) pictured to the left. William (Bill) Veasey is the featured artist for 2018.

This year’s competition will be part of a Waterfowl Weekend and held in conjunction with Wisconsin State Duck and Goose Calling Championships at the same location. Please note, for those of you that participated in our First Annual Decoy Carving Contest, there have been some changes in categories and entrant classes for the 2018 contest.
NEW FOR 2018! IWCA DECORATIVE LIFESIZE - NON-FLOATING (LIMITED TO WATERFOWL)
This is a new division for 2018. The Decorative class is painted with extra detail and precision. All entries in this division must be made of wood; full body decoys are allowed. They should have life-like attitude. Feet and legs must be hand carved or constructed by the carver in open level only. This division includes all duck categories (puddle, diving, sea) along with geese and swans, confidence and shorebirds and wading birds. These decoys will be judged on the shelf. Again, this division will have two carver levels, Open and Amateur. Ribbons will be awarded per IWCA rules. Cash award will be given for Best of Show in each carver class. Please carefully review the rules in Appendix-C.
The following IWCA Decorative Lifesize - Non-floating categories shall be recognized at the 2018 WWA Carving Competition:
3.2.1. Puddle or Marsh Duck—Includes all species of mallard, black duck, pintail, widgeon, gadwall, teal, wood duck, and shoveler.
3.2.2. Diving Ducks—Includes all species of canvasback, redhead, scaup, ringneck, golden-eye, bufflehead, ruddy duck (summer or winter), and hooded merganser.
3.2.3. Sea Ducks—Includes all species of smew, long-tailed duck , scoter, eider, harlequin, red-breasted merganser, and common merganser.
3.2.4. Geese and Swans—Includes all species of geese, including brant and swans.
3.2.5. Confidence—Includes all species of gulls, loons (summer or winter), coots, gallinules, and all others.
3.2.7. Shorebirds and Wading Birds (Decorative and Decoy)—Avocets, cranes, curlews, dowitchers, dunlins, flamingos, godwits, herons, ibises, knots, limpkins, oystercatchers, plovers, rails, sandpipers, snipe, stilts, storks, turnstones, whimbrels, willets, yellowlegs.
There will be no divisions for raptors, songbirds or minatures judged at the 2018 competition
Entries may be checked in on Friday, August 10th.
Judging is on Saturday, August 11th.
Entries may be checked out after 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 12th.

The Janice Smith Memorial Champagne Waterfowl Competition is hosted by the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center during their annual "Waterfowl Weekend" and at the same time as the Core Sound Decoy Festival in Harkers Island, NC. the first weekend in December.
Janice Smith Memorial Champagne Floating Waterfowl Competition

Registration starting at 4pm - December 1st, 2017 - Judging begins at 6:00pm.
Entries may be any species of domestic North American waterfowl (geese, swan & ducks. Loons will be included.)
First Place will become the property of the competition sponsor and will on display for a period of one year at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center.
Second and Third place entries become the property of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center and will be auctioned off (live auction) directly following the competition.
Each competing carver will get two complimentary tickets to attend the Waterfowl Weekend Friday Night Party where the competition will take place.
Pick-up:
Entries (other than 1st, 2nd and 3rd place) may be picked up immediately following the competition. If the competitor wishes for someone other than him or herself to pick up their entry, they MUST designate the authorized person (with a phone number) on their form at the time of entry or provide a shipping box complete with packing material and return postage to mail out after Monday, December 4th.
Entry fee:
$10 each entry. Mail-ins will be accepted and must include return postage.
Prizes:
First place: $400 plus ribbon ~ Second place: $300 plus ribbon ~ Third place: $200 plus ribbon

History of the Janice M. Smith Champagne Waterfowl Competition

The late Janice M. Smith and her husband Billy were waterfowl enthusiasts, spending time at the Easton Waterfowl Festival, the Ward World Carving Competition and in southern Louisiana where they visited in conjunction with their seafood business, collecting from some of the finest decoy carvers in the world during this time period.
Janice and Billy were very supportive of the Core Sound Decoy Festival and worked to bring some ideas of what they had observed at other waterfowl festivals back home to try. One of these ideas was a contest featuring a decoy small enough to fit inside of a champagne glass (3.5”) held at the Easton Waterfowl Festival in Easton, MD. The contest was held for one year at the Core Sound Decoy Festival in the mid-1990’s.
It was their love of Core Sound decoy carving, and the heritage that bred these carvers, which persuaded Janice and Billy (the first CSWM Board Chairman) to support the establishment of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center. Janice never gave up on the idea of champagne waterfowl decoy competition and spoke of it periodically. After her passing in early 2015, Kathryn S. Chadwick, granddaughter of Janice & Billy (then the CSWM&HC Board Chair) pursued sponsoring a contest in Janice’s memory. Thus the first Janice M. Smith Champagne Waterfowl Competition was held in conjunction with Waterfowl Weekend 2015. The winner of the 2015 contest was Walter “Brother” Gaskill and the 2016 winner was Gary Doviak.
This is Sammie Humphries, son of Ken & Dawn Humphries from Marshallberg, NC. Sammie participated last year at the Core Sound Decoy Show and was rewarded for his hard work with a blue ribbon for his entry.
I have chosen him as my Carver of the Week for working very hard on his entry in the IWCA Young Guns Championship Competition that will be held December 2-3, 2017 at the Core Sound Decoy Festival.

The 2017 IWCA Young Guns Championship and the IWCA Canvas Decoy Championship will be hosted by the Core Sound Decoy Festival on December 2nd and 3rd, Harkers Island, NC.
The Core Sound Decoy Festival has been a coastal tradition since 1988. Held the first full weekend in December on Harkers Island, this two-day festival includes antique decoy exhibits, retriever demonstrations, a head whittling contest, and decoy competitions with categories for every kind of carver.
There are fun activities for children and educational exhibits, as well as live and silent auctions. Harkers Island Elementary School staff and volunteers dish out scrumptious food, and vendors spread their wares for shoppers who flock to the Festival. This event benefits the Core Sound Decoy Carver's Guild and Harkers Island Elementary School and is the area's largest off-season event.
